The world of professional tennis (the men’s ATP tour and the women’s WTA tour) only rolls through the US at certain times of the year so a lot of early planning is required to gain tickets to these events.

For the men and women there are basically two seasons, the early year indoor and hard court season in February/March and the sweltering hard court season beginning in August and leading up to the US Open in September. Several big Masters Series events (the next tier down from the Grand Slams where all the major players usually play) are played during this time – there are 4 Masters series events in the US during the year.

Besides the ATP and WTA events, there have always been the popular professional tennis leagues that the likes of Martina Navratilova, Lindsay Davenport, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe have been strong supporters of over the years. Currently called the World Team Tennis League, teams are ‘owned’ by major professional stars and teams are selected based on the talent that makes them available for that year.

Teams that played in the 2002 WTTL were the Delaware Smash, the Hartford Fox Force, the Kansas City Explorers, the New York Buzz, the New York Hamptons, the Philadelphia Freedoms, the Sacramento Capitals, the Springfield Lasers, and the St Louis Aces. Some of the players on those teams include the John McEnroe, Lindsay Davenport, Andy Roddick, James Blake, Meghann Shaughnessy, Mark Philippoussis, Alexandra Stevenson, Max Mirnyi and Amanda Coetzer. The competition runs through July and August.

As well as this is the secondary ATP and WTA Challengers Circuit, which roam from country to country throughout the year. In the US, there are Challenger tournaments in Dallas (Texas), Joplin (Missouri), North Miami Beach (Florida), Tarzana (California), Birmingham (Alabama), Calabasas (California), Rocky Mount (North Carolina), Tallahassee (Florida), Lexington (Kentucky), Binghamton (New York), Bronx (New York), Kerrville (Texas), Tulsa (Oklahoma), and Fresno (California).
