There have been several versions of a national soccer competition over the years and the latest iteration - the NSL - wound up in early 2004. In that time, there have been several teams that have folded and several new teams entered, with Sydney having had the most amount of teams in the competition (5). The competition was dogged by financial problems and poor publicity as a result of losing many top players to European clubs and the national team continually failing to make the World Cup final. Therefore a new competition with new powerful administrators will start in 2005 with 10 new teams, with applications from new and old teams being considered in 2004.
