| CITY OVERVIEW
Stay in Hobart
|
Hobart is the capital of what is becoming an
increasingly popular state to visit. For many years Hobart has
entered the national spotlight in the days after Boxing Day as the host of
the finish of the world famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht race. The finish up
the Derwent River into Hobart and the celebrations that ensues (The Taste
of Tasmania Food Festival is held at this time) receives national
and international news coverage every year.
It is therefore easy to understand that Hobart has a very nautical feel. Vessels of different size and look sit lazily on the Derwent every day of the year - many of which are available for hire to take tourists for a trip along the Derwent. Hobart itself is a historical treasure - there seem to be more antique stores in Hobart than most other cities. The Saturday Salamanca Place Market showcases many of the arts and crafts contained within Hobart. If you only have a short amount of time, a visit to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery will provide with a good insight into Tasmania's historical value. But just walking through the streets of Hobart itself will give you the best feel for the heritage of the place as many buildings representative of the colonial past have been retained. Hobart sits below one of Tasmania's tallest mountains - Mount Wellington. Be sure to take the short drive to the summit to see some of the most spectacular natural views in the state. |

Ticket information through Tasmanian Tigers
|
The Tasmanian Tigers were the last state to be entered in the Sheffield Shield – in the 1977/78 season. Although producing some outstanding cricketers, including the current Australian one-day cricket captain in Ricky Ponting, the Tigers have yet to win a title, although they did win the then Gillette Cup one-day competition in 1978/79. |
| BELLERIVE OVAL |
Bellerive Oval hosts the Tigers and international cricket matches, as well as the local Australian football team the Clarence Roos, and is located on the corner of Church and Derwent Streets in the suburb of Bellerive, which is some 3km east of the City Centre across the Derwent. Although it has been upgraded extensively over the years to bring it up to Test-match cricket standard, the capacity of the ground is just over 12,000 and several sections of the ground are grass-seating. From the Hobart Bus Station on Elizabeth Street in the City Centre, take Hobart’s Metrotas Bus Routes 284, 285 or 287 that go to Camelot Park via Bellerive Quay. The buses go along Clarence Street one block north of the ground – get off at the intersection of Clarence and Douglas Street/Derwent Street and walk south down Derwent Street to the ground. |
