Dunedin is one of the most unique cities in
New Zealand and is definately worth the visit of you are interested in
seeing one of the cricket or rugby internationals that are regularly
played at Carisbrook.
It is famed as being the 'Edinburgh' of the south and proudly boasts the finest Victorian architecture in the southern hemisphere. Some of the architectural gems include Lanarchs Castle, Olveston House, the Dunedin Railway Station and the Dunedin Law Courts. One way to gain an appreciation of the rugged nature of the surrounding Otago region is to catch the Taieri Gorge Railway. Daily trips take you some 60km from Dunedin to Pukerangi to the north-west. You travel along some of the best scenery in the country. Dunedin is also the closest major city to Queenstown to the north-west past Pukerangi, a mecca for tourists travelling to New Zealand for skiiing. |

THE HIGHLANDERS |
Formerly known as the ‘Otago’ Highlanders, the Highlanders have not quite matched the success of the Blues or the Crusaders in the Super 12 competition but they have made a Super 12 Final and won many more than they have lost. The Highlanders have consistently threatened to win a title - they made the semi-finals in 1998, 2000 and 2002, with their final appearance being in 1999 against the Crusaders. |
| CARISBROOK |
Carisbrook is the home of the Highlanders as well as New Zealand Rugby Union matches and international cricket matches. It is located on the corner of Burns and Neville Streets near the suburb of Caversham, just off the Caversham Bypass Motorway, some 6km south of the City Centre. Dunedin Rugby and cricket matches have been played at Carisbrook for over a century and is one of the most intimidating for touring international teams to play in, especially when the weather closes in during winter. Carisbrook has a capacity of approximately 25,000. Catch the Dunedin bus services that leaves from the Octagon right in the centre of the City that goes to Corstorphine/Lookout Point via Caversham. This route goes straight past Carisbrook on South Road. Get off at the intersection near Burns Road. Note that the stop near Carisbrook is on the return leg back to the Octagon. |
