Stay in Cairns
|
Cairns is the most northerly major city in
Queensland - located some 350km north of Townsville and some 1750km
north of Brisbane. Like Townsville, Cairns is a gateway to the Great
Barrier Reef and therefore contains many opportunties for diving, ferry and aquatic exploration tours. Cairns is also the
major gateway to the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest National
Park. As well, the beaches north of
Cairns are an attraction in themself - some of the whitest sand and bluest
water you'll ever find.
One of the best ways of visiting the adjacent rainforests is the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which is an 8 kilometre ride from end to end, which makes it the world's longest gondola cableway. You can get on at Caravonica Lakes Station, which is just past the north-western outskirts of Cairns, and get off at Kuranda at the edge of the National Park. Cairns itself should not be underrated as a place to visit. Cairns' best bars and eateries are located in and around Shields Street, Spence Street, The Esplanade and the Pier Market Place. The Reef Casino on Wharf Street is also a major attraction for tourists. |
| GETTING THERE
Fly to Cairns

Cairns International Airport is directly accessible to most other Australian cities and several international cities. It is located just 5km north of the City Centre and is accessible to the Centre by an Airport Shuttle Coach service to and from the City. Cairns public transport system is bus-based, with services provided by Sunbus. Most people drive cars in these parts, so public transport services are somewhat irregular, moreso on weekends. |
| NBL
CAIRNS TAIPANS |
The Cairns Taipans are the newest of the NBL teams in the competition, having entered in 1999. Unlike their nearest neighbour Townsville, the Taipans have yet to make their mark, although their record has steadily improved since their debut season. |
| CAIRNS CONVENTION CENTRE |
The Cairns Convention Centre hosts the Taipans and is located on the corner of Sheridan Street and Wharf Street in the south-eastern end of the City Centre. Upgraded to become the home of the Taipans in 1999, the Centre has a capacity of over 5,000. Being located in south-eastern end of the City means that the Covention Centre is walkable from most central locations. |
