Motor Racing is dominated in
Australia and NZ by V8 touring cars - traditionally the domain of
australian car makers Holden and Ford. The V8 Super Car Series is
therefore the premier car racing event during the year.
The major race since the 1960's that has showcased the Holden v Ford rivalry has been the Bathurst 1000 mile race on the most famous rural street circuit in Australia. Although going through a few iterations over the years, the Bathurst 1000 still maintains its title as the most popular motor race in the country. In its glory days, it was one of the most watched sporting events in the country. Australia is also home to international grand prix events, including the Formula One in Melbourne, the 500cc world motor cycling championship and the World Super Bike Championships at Phillip Island in Victoria and the CART Indy 300 on the Gold Coast. |
